The Vikings announced early Wednesday morning they have placed quarterback Matt Cassel and guard Brandon Fusco on injured reserve.
This stems from injuries that both players sustained in a 20-9 loss against the New Orleans Saints last week. Cassel fractured several bones in his foot and Fusco injured a pectoral muscle late in the game. The Vikings made two corresponding roster moves and elevated guard Austin Wentworth and tight end Chase Ford to the active 53-man roster.
It is unknown who will replace Brandon Fusco at guard, but Vlad Ducasse entered the game following Fusco's injury. The team could turn to versatile veteran Joe Berger, or rookies David Yankey, and Austin Wentworth if they aren't comfortable with Ducasse handling the starting duties.
Matt Cassel's injury means the reigns will be handed to rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater for the remainder of the 2014 season. Bridgewater will be making his first NFL start on Sunday against Atlanta and many are excited to see how the rookie handles a full game of action.
To fill the open practice squad spots, the Vikings signed quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson and tight end Ryan Otten.
Bethel-Thompson previously spent two seasons in Minnesota from 2012 to 2013. He could be elevated to the active roster as the third quarterback if the Vikings decide to place Kyle Rudolph on a reserve list.
Otten, a two-year veteran who played college football at San Jose State, is a 6'6", 241 pound tight end. He previously spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, San Diego Chargers, and most recently on the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad in 2014.
